1882 Catholic Church in Galisteo

This church is the primary landmark in Galisteo now. It is located just off the highway and dominates the town. Across the street is a gas station and herb store. You walk inside and notice fire oil for sale on a dusty shelf. The small woman running the store tells you, "No mas pictures." You decide to leave the store and walk down the dusty main street past tourists on horseback.

Galisteo was originally an Indian Pueblo. It was chosen in 1614 as the site for a Spanish mission. The mission was abandoned after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and the town was reestablished in 1702. The town is small and not really a ghost town, but it is pretty and it was worth visiting.
